We love to talk about this (because it’s so important to us): building the self-esteem of learners from Foundation Phase through to matric is vital to their future success. So where do sports fit in? Research consistently highlights the link between sports and improved self-esteem, focus, academic performance, and physical well-being. More than that, participation in sports helps learners grow in areas like teamwork, discipline, and resilience—all of which are integral to the holistic development that Hillcrest Collegiate strives for.
We have been working behind the scenes to build a thriving sports culture at the school for some time. While the journey faced initial challenges—the school is fairly new, and we had a small student body—management was determined to create an environment where learners thrive, both in and out of the classroom.
Team Spirit
The growth of the school has allowed this vision to become a reality. Over the past year, Hillcrest Collegiate reached an exciting milestone. The school now boasts a netball team, a boys’ soccer team, and a girls’ soccer team. These teams have had two successful terms of playing soccer and netball, including competing with neighboring Waterfall College and Hillcrest High. These interschool events have provided an opportunity for athletic growth and created camaraderie among students, strengthening their bonds as teammates and as part of the larger school community.
The introduction of team sports has also sparked immense pride at Hillcrest Collegiate. Students were thrilled to receive their new soccer and netball uniforms, and this excitement has led many learners to ask for a full school uniform. The school has already introduced a tracksuit and golf shirt, with additional items such as shorts, skorts, and jerseys currently in development.
Hillcrest Collegiate believes that success in sports is not just about winning games—it’s about building confidence, nurturing skills, and fostering teamwork. This aligns perfectly with the school’s educational ethos: by laying strong foundations, students are equipped with the most important skill of all—thinking like winners.
Laying the Groundwork for Future Sporting Success
One of the most transformative projects completed this year was the resurfacing of the tennis court into a multipurpose sporting facility. This has had a tremendous impact on student life, sparking renewed enthusiasm for sports. The new court has become a central hub where students can socialize, play, and practice sports. Watching the students enjoy this space is a source of pride for the school.
Looking to the future, Hillcrest Collegiate has plans to develop a multi-purpose soccer and rugby field, with the possibility of adding a cricket pitch. This will further enhance the school’s sports program and provide even more opportunities for students to engage in physical activities. In the meantime, the soccer team has been practicing on a field generously provided by Hillcrest High, just 500 meters away, allowing the school to continue its soccer development while eagerly awaiting the completion of its own sports field.
As part of its long-term vision, Hillcrest Collegiate aims to join other local schools in the sports arena. This will strengthen the sense of community within the school, foster a spirit of healthy competition, and give our learners a stronger sense of belonging in the wider community.
As Hillcrest Collegiate continues to grow its sports culture, the benefits extend far beyond the field. Students are developing discipline, teamwork, and a deep sense of pride in their school.
Hillcrest Collegiate staff and learners are looking forward to many more memorable moments, both on and off the field.
